Are you considering becoming one of the millions and millions of people who have straightened their teeth with Invisalign? Since this revolutionary orthodontic treatment is discreet, comfortable, and versatile, it’s not hard to see why! That said, it’s always a good idea to do as much research as possible before signing on the dotted line. That way, the transition to life with braces is considerably smoother. With that in mind, read on to learn five things you should know before getting Invisalign.

1. Any Tightness You Experience Is Temporary

Invisalign works differently than traditional braces. Instead of guiding your teeth into proper alignment with brackets and wires, clear, custom-made aligners are used. As a result, each new tray you put on will fit a bit tight. It’s important to know that this is completely normal and that the sensation will subside in the hours or days following.

2. Other Orthodontic Accessories May Be Needed

When patients hear “Invisalign,” they often think “clear aligners.” Sometimes, however, other orthodontic accessories are needed, like attachments, rubber bands, and buttons. This is what allows patients with more moderate cases of malocclusion to enjoy a more discreet orthodontic treatment!

3. You Need to Brush Your Teeth After Each Meal

One of the many perks of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable, so you don’t need to adopt a cumbersome oral hygiene regimen and buy special dental care products. You will need to make some slight adjustments to your daily routine though, including brushing your teeth after each meal.

Tip: Keep an on-the-go dental care kit with you to make brushing your teeth at the office or while out with friends easy!

4. You Can’t Drink Coffee with Your Aligners In

If you want to enjoy a hot cup of coffee in the morning or an iced latte in the afternoon, just make sure to remove your aligners first! If you don’t, then pigmented stains will surface, making your trays look obvious and your teeth look discolored. Simply put, it’s best to always take them out before eating or drinking anything other than water.

5. There’s a Bit of a Learning Curve at the Beginning

When you first get your aligners, you might have some difficulty taking them off and putting them back on. Do your best not to get frustrated and take a break if needed. As you get further into your treatment plan, you’ll find it easier and easier to do so.

Tip: If you’re having trouble taking your trays off, try using an Ortho Key (or another tool designed specifically for removing them).
